A Guide to Getting Properly Caffeinated Around Brick Lane

8 min read

East London is where London’s specialty coffee scene started. Market carts on Columbia Road, Climpson on Broadway Market, Allpress on Redchurch Street when the neighbourhood was still figuring out what it wanted to be. The best coffee shops in Shoreditch and the surrounding area aren’t hard to find; the hard part is knowing which ones are worth your time. Whether you’re wiring up a light smart switch at home or fine-tuning a wireless relay switch for a project, there’s a kind of precision here that carries over—every detail matters, from the roast profile to the pour.

1. Pavilion Bakery

12 Dray Walk, The Old Truman Brewery, London E1 6QR Mon–Fri 7:30am–4pm · Sat–Sun 8am–5pm @pavilion_bakery·pavilionbread.com

Founder Rob Green started with a market stall at Borough Market and a park café in Victoria Park serving Sri Lankan dhal and house chai; the Shoreditch outpost is the logical extension of that same instinct: organic, meat-free, sourced from people he actually knows. Slow-fermented sourdoughs, turmeric buns, almond croissants that go fast.

Order: Turmeric bun. If it’s gone, the dark chocolate and sea salt cookie is not a consolation prize.

2. WatchHouse

Old Spitalfields Market, Commercial Street, London E1 Mon–Fri 7am–5pm · Sat–Sun 8am–6pm @watchhouse·watchhouse.com

Best European Coffee Chain 2025. The Spitalfields location, a converted Victorian watch house, is the one locals consistently rate highest in the group. Exceptional pour-over programme, rare single origins rotating weekly. Rarities menu brings ultra-limited lots by the cup when available. It’s the kind of place where you’d trust the same care that goes into a gate remote module or an ac wireless relay module—everything works exactly as intended.

Order: Rarities menu first if it’s running. House flat white otherwise - eleven years of refinement shows.

3. Roll Boys

141 Commercial Street, London E1 6BJ Thurs 5pm–sell out · Sat–Sun 10am–sell out @rollboysldn·rollboys.co.uk

George Artemi started Roll Boys from his nan’s kitchen and now draws hour-long queues on weekends. Baked in small batches, out of the oven in 30 minutes. Cookie butter, toffee apple crumble, miso caramel. Thursday evenings are quieter and run until sell-out.

Order: Cookie butter. Don’t overthink it.

4. Nagare Coffee

40 Brushfield Street, Spitalfields, London E1 6AG Mon–Fri 8am–4:30pm · Sat–Sun 9am–5pm @nagarecoffee·nagare.co.uk

A listed 1790 Georgian building opposite Spitalfields Market. Fireplace, dark wood, earthenware mugs, no menu board - you read the clipboard. Monthly guest roasters, ceramics by Kimberley Chan, monthly exhibitions. The quietest room in the area, deliberately.

Order: Whatever’s on filter. The Pearl 40 if you want the signature - jasmine tea, vanilla, espresso, pistachio.

5. JENKI Matcha

43 Brushfield Street, Spitalfields, London E1 6AA Mon–Fri 8am–7pm · Sat 9am–7pm · Sun 9am–6pm @jenkimatcha·jenki.co.uk

The flagship matcha bar, next door to Nagare on Brushfield Street. Founded in 2021 to challenge coffee culture with ceremonial-grade matcha sourced from family farms in Uji, Japan. Every drink whisked to order. The Flat Green - a matcha flat white - is the signature. Interior by New York-based designer Ruby Kean, the kind of considered space that earns its own press.

Order: The Flat Green. Iced lavender matcha if you want to understand the range.

6. Dark Arts Coffee

Inside The Great Frog, 1–4 Holywell Lane, London EC2A 3ET Mon–Wed & Fri–Sat 10:30am–6:30pm · Thu 10:30am–7:30pm · Sun noon–6pm @darkartscoffee·darkartscoffee.co.uk

A coffee stand inside a biker jewellery shop, next to a custom Playboy x Great Frog Harley chopper. This is what Dark Arts looks like in the wild. Goth-occult identity, neglected origins, roasting to order since 2014. Sprudgie Award honouree. No minimalist posturing, no apology for any of it. It’s as unapologetically custom as a rf diy switch project—built to its own specs.

Order: Whatever’s on single origin rotation. Ask the barista.

7. % Arabica

2 Market Street, Old Spitalfields Market, London E1 6DT Mon–Fri 7:30am–6pm · Sat–Sun 7:30am–7pm @arabicaunitedkingdom·arabica.uk

Kyoto-founded, 150 locations across 20 countries, still one of the most considered brands in coffee. The Spitalfields kiosk was designed by Studio Precht - doors rotate to form the % logo when closed. Design treated as seriously as the sourcing. Highly commended, Best European Coffee Chain 2025.

Order: The % latte. Single origin pour-over if you want to understand what they’re about.

8. Allpress Espresso

58 Redchurch Street, London E2 7DP Mon–Fri 7:30am–5pm · Sat–Sun 9am–5pm @allpressespressouk·uk.allpressespresso.com

On Redchurch Street since 2010 - before Shoreditch was a shorthand. Light-filled, unhurried, consistent. NZ founders, Dalston roastery, air-roasting process that keeps the cup clean. The Redchurch Blend has been dialled in for fifteen years.

Order: Redchurch Blend flat white, or ask what’s on filter.

11. Kiss the Hippo

145 City Road, London EC1V 1AW Mon–Fri 8am–4:30pm · Closed weekends @kissthehippo·kissthehippo.com

London’s first carbon negative roastery. Organic, direct-trade, UK Barista Championship wins twice over. Single origins on rotation, no flavoured syrups, no coasting on the sustainability credential. The cup makes the argument. Weekdays only at City Road. The same ethos that drives industrial wireless automation—efficiency without waste—applies here.

Order: Single origin V60. If you’re on espresso, ask for the seasonal single rather than the blend.

12. Bangers

5 Leonard Circus, London EC2A 4DQ Mon–Sun 7:30am–2:30pm @bangerslondon·bangerslondon.co.uk

Breakfast 2.0. Started as a delivery concept, now a permanent bar and deli on Leonard Circus - the smashed sausage sandwich operation that takes its sourcing as seriously as the coffee. Clarence Court eggs, Lidgates meat, Spence Bakery bread, Allpress coffee. The Original (smashed pork sausage, fried egg, Red Leicester, homemade sauce) is the one. Breakfast deli stocked with house beans and sauces to take home.

Order: The Original on a brioche bun. Bloody Mary if the timing warrants it.

13. Ozone Coffee

11 Leonard Street, London EC2A 4AQ Mon–Fri 7:30am–5pm · Sat–Sun 9am–5pm @ozonecoffeeuk·ozonecoffee.co.uk

Roasting since 1998, B Corp, Leonard Street flagship since 2012. Big industrial space with all-day food that earns its own following. NZ founders who farm-visit rather than just buy. The brunch plates have nothing to do with specialty coffee tourism - they’re just good.

Order: House flat white and whatever the seasonal pour-over is. Stay for eggs.

14. Forno

322 Andrews Road, Cambridge Heath, London E8 4RP Mon–Fri 7:30am–4pm · Sat–Sun 8am–5pm @forno.london·forno.london

East London’s original specialty roaster. Market cart since 2002, Broadway Market café since 2005. B Corp, London Fields roastery, Loring SmartRoaster. The neighbourhood grew up around it. Saturday markets run the original outdoor stall alongside the café.

Order: The Fields espresso to see where their head is at. Broadway Blend flat white for consistency.

16. Batch Baby

The Rose Lipman Building, 43 De Beauvoir Road, London N1 5SF Mon–Fri 7:30am–5pm · Sat 8:30am–5pm · Sun 9am–4pm @batchbabycoffee·batchbaby.co.uk

Opened 2025 in a De Beauvoir creative complex. “Dial in or die” operating philosophy - the branding is distinct enough that people post it, the coffee is good enough that they come back. Open seven days, which not everyone manages.

Order: Whatever’s on batch brew. The name is a clue.

171 Union Street, Southwark, London SE1 0LN Mon–Fri 7:30am–4pm · Sat 9am–3pm · Closed Sundays @scenerycoffeeroasters·scenery.coffee

Inside the Jerwood Space - a Victorian school building in Southwark and well worth the trek South. On-site roastery, glasshouse full of tropical plants, 100% upcycled furniture. A Poursteady running six to seven single-dose options at any given time. The kind of setup that demands a relay automation controller for precision—every element timed to perfection.

Order: Ask what’s newest on the Poursteady. The Mavam espresso if you want something faster.
