Madeleine Hoy, a Wollongon-based designer, founded Sydney-based candle shop Nonna’s Grocer, and it all started with an inevitable inspiration from Madeleine’s family heritage: her great-grandfather was a fruit shop owner after settling in his new home in Victoria.

Made with love, appreciation for food artistry, and attention to detail, Nonna’s Grocer’s candles are a definite hit among candle lovers. Tell us a bit about your brand!

Nonna’s Groceris a concept candle store inspired by our Great-grandfather Giuseppe who migrated from Salina (Italy) to Daylesford (Victoria) where he established his first fruit shop, (followed by three more in and around Melbourne).

As an ode to his craftsmanship and food artistry, we began experimenting with the world of wax and launched our very first product: a Lemon Candle.

Our concept is, in a way, a playful continuation of the family narrative, but with a female-led focus, hence the name Nonna’s Grocer.

Tell us about the design for your packaging and how you’re using them?

We use compostable and recyclable tissue paper,packing tape, andproduct boxes to house our waxy goods. It is really important to us to work with environmentally-friendly materials in all stages of our product cycle, which means no single-use plastic.

The challenge for our produce-inspired candles is transporting them in a way that prevents bumps and bruises during their journey, without the use of traditional protectants like bubble-wrap. We are super pleased we have been able to offer the same level of protection with thoughtful packaging that doesn’t end up in landfill.
